Seriatopora caliendrum
A Seriatopora whose slender branches divide densely into a hemispherical thicket. Unlike the related S. hystrix its branch tips end bluntly rather than in needle points, which the Japanese name reflects. Colour may be pink, brown or green.
Seriatopora caliendrum is a reef-building pocilloporid of the Indo-West Pacific. SeaLifeBase gives its depth range as 3-35 m and a maximum colony width of about 30 cm. Slender branches divide densely into a hemispherical thicket, but the tips end bluntly rather than in the needle points of the related S. hystrix. The corallites are arranged in rows along the branches, which is what the genus name Seriatopora refers to. Colour may be pink, brown or green. It is zooxanthellate and draws most of its nutrition from photosynthesis. In the aquarium give it strong light and moderate to strong randomised flow that reaches between the branches. It is sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry and to stagnant flow, and bleaching can start from the interior of the thicket, so choose a well-flushed position. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2023, and as a scleractinian it is listed on CITES Appendix II.

Mainly nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemented with powdered coral foods and phytoplankton.
Prefers strong light; LiveAquaria lists high lighting for birdsnest corals. Start at reduced intensity and raise it gradually.
Bleaching starts where water stagnates inside the thicket. Choose a spot where moderate to strong randomised flow reaches the interior, and place it high on the rockwork.
Water 24-27C, specific gravity 1.023-1.025 (33-35 ppt), KH 8-12, calcium 400-450 ppm, magnesium 1280-1350 ppm. Sudden swings in alkalinity are the most common cause of tissue recession.
Most of its nutrition comes from photosynthesis by its zooxanthellae. Powdered coral foods and phytoplankton can be offered as a supplement, but stable light and water chemistry matter more than feeding.
The branches are slender and break easily, so avoid touching the colony when handling or changing water. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, and as a scleractinian it falls under the blanket CITES Appendix II listing.
Intermediate. This is an intermediate-level species. Some prior experience and knowledge of environmental management are recommended.
The ideal temperature for Seriatopora Caliendrum is 24〜27℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
Seriatopora Caliendrum typically reaches Colonies to about 30cm across as an adult. Size may vary depending on care conditions and individual genetics.
Seriatopora Caliendrum feeds on: Mainly nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemented with powdered coral foods and phytoplankton.. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
