About
Acropora secale is a branching staghorn coral of the western Indo-Pacific, ranging from the coasts of East Africa, Mozambique, Rodrigues, Aldabra and Chagos east to Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and northern and western Australia; the type locality is Sri Lanka. It grows on outer reef flats, reef slopes, reef edges and walls, and SeaLifeBase records a depth range of 3-10 m. Colonies form low hummocks with cylindrical branches up to 20 mm in diameter and 70 mm long that taper towards the tips; the lower branches are longer than the upper ones, giving the colony a level-topped look. The corallites are arranged in vertical rows of alternating sizes, with axial corallites up to 3 mm across and radial corallites opening in long tubular or nose-like mouths. Colour schemes include purple with yellow branch tips, pale brown with blue tips, plain green and plain brown. It is a hermaphrodite that spawns once a year, six days after the full moon. The IUCN lists it as Endangered and it is on CITES Appendix II.
