Amazona albifrons
The smallest amazon parrot, marked by a white forehead patch and red feathering around the eyes. Males have red primary coverts, making it one of the few amazons that can be sexed by sight.
The white-fronted amazon (Amazona albifrons) ranges from Mexico into northern Central America and is the smallest member of the genus. Males have red primary coverts, so the sexes can be told apart by sight, which is unusual among amazons. Three subspecies are recognised: the nominate albifrons plus saltuensis and nana. In captivity it becomes tame, playful and can learn to talk, but its calls are loud and it suits detached housing rather than flats. The World Parrot Trust recommends housing at least 3 m long. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern with an increasing population, though trapping for trade continues in Mexico.
