About
The red-lored amazon (Amazona autumnalis) ranges from eastern Mexico through Central America into northwestern South America. The sexes look alike; juveniles show less yellow on the cheeks and less red on the forehead. Two subspecies are recognised, the nominate autumnalis and salvini. Many individuals learn to mimic speech, but the bird is loud and may bite, so training from a young age is essential. Avocado and eggplant are toxic and must never be fed. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern, though trapping for trade and habitat loss continue.
