The yellow-naped amazon (Amazona auropalliata) inhabits dry forest and mangrove on the Pacific slope from southern Mexico through Central America. It nests in tree cavities, and breeding pairs are monogamous and defend small territories. Its strong mimicry has made it a sought-after companion bird, but deforestation and illegal capture have driven a steep decline, and the IUCN assesses it as Critically Endangered. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of Amazona ochrocephala. Three subspecies are recognised alongside the nominate: parvipes and caribaea. The World Parrot Trust recommends housing at least 3 m long.
