Taeniopygia guttata 'Jumbo'
A trade name for zebra finches selected for a larger, heavier build. The red bill, the male's orange cheek patch and barred breast are the same as in ordinary zebra finches, but the bird looks bulkier.
Jumbo zebra finch is a Japanese trade name for zebra finches selected for a larger build. Birds sold as 'jumbo' have no unified breed standard or size criterion, and individuals vary widely. Colours and sexing are the same as in ordinary zebra finches: males have orange cheek patches, throat stripes, a black chest bar and chestnut flank markings, which females lack, and in white or pale birds the male's deeper red bill usually separates the sexes. Domestic zebra finches derive from the Australian population, which the International Ornithological Congress has treated since 2022 as Taeniopygia castanotis, separate from the species of Timor and nearby islands. UK aviculturists note that the closed rings breeders fit to chicks record the year of hatching and act as a pedigree, and advise buying birds no older than 18 months for breeding. Size varies between individuals, so look at the parent birds when choosing. In Japan these birds are sold by specialist bird shops and breeders.
