Measuring the pH, ammonia concentration, specific gravity, and water temperature of the transport water will allow you to judge the appropriate pace for acclimation.
Correct Procedure for the Drip Method
The drip method is the most popular and safe acclimation method. Transfer the fish with the transport water into a clean bucket, and add aquarium water little by little through an air tube. Adjust the flow rate by tying a knot in the middle of the air tube or by attaching a valve. The basic speed is 2-3 drops per second, and for delicate fish species (butterflyfishes, angelfish, etc.), slow it down further to about 1 drop per second. When the water volume in the bucket has become 2-3 times the original, discard half and continue dripping again. By repeating this "adding and discarding" 2-3 times, the components of the transport water are nearly replaced with aquarium water. The total time required is approximately 60-90 minutes. If there is a large difference in water temperature, place an aquarium heater beside the bucket to adjust the temperature.
Utilizing the Bucket Method (Staged Dilution Method)
The bucket method is a faster acclimation method than the drip method and is suitable for relatively hardy fish species (damselfishes, clownfish, gobies, etc.). Transfer the fish with the transport water into a bucket, and add one cup of aquarium water every 15 minutes. Repeat 4-5 times until the water volume is sufficient, then acclimation is complete. The time required is approximately 60 minutes. The advantage of this method is that setup is simpler compared to the drip method, and no air tube or valve is needed. However, since a larger amount of water is added at once, the water quality change is more abrupt than with the drip method. For delicate fish species or when there is a large water quality difference between transport water and aquarium water, choose the drip method.
