The progression of fading is not uniform; it goes through a period of becoming partially mottled before the final body color is determined. In sarasa varieties (red and white mottled patterns), the intermediate stages of fading sometimes become the final pattern as is.
Breed-Specific Differences in Color Fading
Color fading patterns differ greatly depending on the breed. Red varieties such as wakin and ryukin begin fading relatively early, and bright red coloration often appears within 3-4 months. Ranchu tend to have slow color fading, and it is not uncommon for it to take more than half a year. Breeds with black body color (black telescope-eye, black ranchu, etc.) maintain their black color by incomplete color fading that stops partway. Therefore, as black varieties age, color fading progresses further, and they may change to red or orange. Calico varieties (red, white, black, and light blue mottled patterns) have complex color fading progression, with pattern distribution continuing to change as they grow.
