Goldfish Disease Guide: Ich, Swim Bladder & Gill Disease

Goldfish are relatively hardy fish, but they can develop diseases due to stress from water quality deterioration or temperature changes. Daily observation and early detection are the best preventive measures.

White Spot Disease (Ich)

This is the most common goldfish disease. It is characterized by many small white dots appearing on the body surface, caused by the protozoan parasite *Ichthyophthirius multifiliis*.

• Symptoms: White spots on body and fins, fish rubbing against objects
• Causes: Low water temperature, sudden temperature changes, stress from introducing new fish
• Treatment: Raise water temperature to near 30°C + medicate with methylene blue or malachite green-based treatments
• Prevention: Always quarantine new fish in a treatment tank for 1–2 weeks

Swim Bladder Disease

This is commonly seen in round-bodied varieties like Ryukin and Pearlscale. It is a swim bladder dysfunction that causes the fish to float upside down at the surface.

• Symptoms: Floating upside down at the surface, inability to swim straight
• Causes: Indigestion, overfeeding, genetic factors, low water temperature
• Treatment: Fast for 1–2 days, maintain water temperature around 25°C, switch to easily digestible food
• Note: Early intervention is crucial as it becomes difficult to cure once chronic

Gill Disease (Bacterial/Parasitic)

This disease occurs when bacteria or parasites infect the gills, reducing gill function and causing breathing difficulty.

• Symptoms: Gasping at the surface, pale gill coloration, loss of appetite
• Causes: Columnaris bacteria, Gyrodactylus parasites
• Treatment: Antibiotic bath or salt bath (0.5–0.6% salt water) is effective
• Prevention: Thorough water quality management, avoid overcrowding

Water Quality Management for Disease Prevention

• Change approximately 1/3 of the tank water weekly
• Rinse filter media regularly
• Avoid sudden temperature changes (more than 3°C in a day)
• Maintain pH 7.0–7.5
