Large rabbit with stunning silver-tipped fur that stands upright when stroked. Known for a gentle, docile temperament ideal for handling.
The Silver Fox rabbit is an American breed developed in the 1920s by Walter B. Garland of Ohio, created through selective breeding involving Checkered Giant and Champagne d'Argent genetics. Adults measure 45–55 cm and weigh 4–5.5 kg. Their most unique feature is a 'stand-up' coat: when stroked from tail to head, the fur stands upright rather than falling back, a texture reminiscent of silver fox fur. Their coat silvering—developed as the rabbit matures, with white-tipped hairs appearing gradually in the black or colored base—adds further visual interest. Color varieties include black, blue, chocolate, and white. Silver Foxes are known for their calm, friendly temperament, adaptability to family life, and ease of handling. Diet is hay-based, supplemented with pellets and vegetables. Coat maintenance requires weekly brushing. Optimal temperature is 15–25 °C. Common health concerns include malocclusion, GI stasis, and sore hocks. Lifespan is 5–8 years.
