Setifer setosus
A spiny small mammal of the tenrec family found across Madagascar. 16-22cm and 175-300g, larger than the existing lesser hedgehog tenrec. Nocturnal, solitary, and prone to torpor.
The greater hedgehog tenrec (Setifer setosus) is endemic to Madagascar, found across the island except in wetlands from sea level to 2,250 m. Its standard Japanese name is Hari-tenrec; Oo-hari-tenrec is the trade name. Its hedgehog-like appearance is convergent evolution; it belongs to the family Tenrecidae in the order Afrosoricida and is unrelated to hedgehogs. It is nocturnal and solitary, an omnivore eating mainly insects and grubs with fruit, and will scavenge. It enters daily torpor and also seasonal torpor or hibernation, so in captivity temperature management to prevent cold-induced torpor is central. Litters are 1-5 young. It is Least Concern and not CITES-listed. Imports fall under the infectious-disease notification system, and in Japan it is only occasionally handled by exotic pet shops. Gloves help when handling because of the spines, and taming takes time. Few veterinarians treat the species, which should be weighed before acquiring one.
