The Dalmatian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is a Golden Hamster color pattern with irregular black patches on a white ground, sold in Japanese pet shops under its own trade name. Genetically it is the dominant spot pattern combined with black coloring, not a separate breed. All pet Golden Hamsters descend from a single family captured in Aleppo, Syria, in 1930; the wild population is assessed as Endangered by the IUCN, but captive animals are unregulated. Adults are strongly territorial and solitary, so each must be housed alone; cohabiting leads to severe fighting and cannibalism. Because the species is so territorial, choose as large a cage as possible and bed it deeply so the hamster can burrow. It hoards up to half its body weight in its cheek pouches, so feed with the stash in mind. Being nocturnal, it sleeps by day and should be handled in the evening.
