The Uno-line ranchu is the line established by the Kyoto potter Uno Jinmatsu, who kept ranchu as a pastime and selected from association-line stock and others according to his own eye, setting out his own standard. Uno was born in 1864 and died in 1937, and his name became the name of the line. This line prizes the development of head growth and beauty of colour, and does not favour large fish. Because its criteria differ fundamentally from the association line, which values a powerful body, balance in the tail and beauty of movement, the two are treated as entirely separate and never judged side by side. The ranchu itself has no dorsal fin and develops head growth, reaches about 15cm, and standardly carries a three-lobed, four-lobed or sakura tail.
