Carassius auratus
A Japanese variety combining four traits: a blue-cast body, pearl scales, telescope eyes and head growth. An amateur breeder spent three decades fixing it, and it was first shown publicly at a 1994 competition.
The horyu is a Japanese variety that gathers four traits in one fish: a blue-cast body, pearl scales, telescope eyes and head growth. It was created by Mr Sakaki, honorary chairman of the Horyu Aikoukai, who from 1968 worked from the ranryu seiga-chotogyo, a black-blue telescope-eyed oranda with head growth, crossing in a red-and-white crown pearl. It was first entered in competition at the inaugural Japan Number One Goldfish Show in 1994. The name joins Ako in Hyogo Prefecture, the breeder's home city, and the ear of rice, with the dragon of the ryugan telescope. The pairing of blue body colour with pearl scales is scarcely seen even in China. The association defines colour classes such as koryu, ranryu, saranryu, kokubyakuryu and hagoromoryu, and groups derived lines as kawari-ryu.

Goldfish varieties arose from fixed mutations and selective breeding, and body form, tail form, scale type, colour and head growth are all carried forward by selection over generations. Inheritance is therefore shown as line-bred throughout rather than split into dominant and recessive.

Provide enough light for the raised pearl scales to read from above and from the side. The blue body colour shifts with the angle of light, so diffuse lighting suits it.
Use a simple layout without sharp edges and keep the flow gentle so the pearl scales and protruding eyes are not damaged. It is sensitive to cold, so watch that winter temperatures do not fall too far.
It does not swim strongly; pair it with other pearlscale types or slow breeds such as the bubble eye and celestial eye. Wakin types will take the food first.
Thickened pearl scales regrow poorly and damaged eyes do not recover. The variety is difficult to produce, circulation is limited, and the line is maintained by the enthusiasts' association.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
The ideal temperature for Horyu is 15〜28℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
The average lifespan of Horyu is 5-6 years. With proper care and nutrition, they can live a long and healthy life.
Horyu feeds on: Prepared foods, frozen bloodworms. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
