Lucihormetica verrucosa is a blaberid cockroach from Venezuela and Colombia that grows to about 4 cm. It is black to dark brown with a white margin to the dorsal sclerites, and males, slightly smaller than females, bear a pair of large yellow spots on the pronotum. These spots were long thought to be light organs, but bioluminescence in cockroaches has been refuted; the glow seen under ultraviolet light is the autofluorescence common to arthropod cuticle. In captivity the spots deepen to orange or red when the roaches are fed carrots, and fat body cells that accumulate carotenoids appear to drive the colour. Both sexes have short wings, stay on the ground and rarely fly. The species is ovoviviparous, females giving birth to about twenty dark nymphs 2-3 mm long. In culture they excavate shallow subterranean networks shared by several individuals.
