Elliptorhina javanica is a large wingless cockroach from Madagascar, named in English for the orange and yellow striping on its black body. There are red-pronotum and black-pronotum colour forms, with intermediate individuals. Newborn nymphs are grey, quickly turn black, then gain orange and yellow tones before reaching their final colour scheme at maturity. When disturbed they force air through the spiracles on the fourth abdominal segment to produce a hiss. Keep at 26-29 C; all life stages climb glass, so a sealed lid is required. Feed vegetables and fruit with grains and dried hardwood leaves.
