Princisia vanwaerebeki is endemic to south-eastern Madagascar and is the only species in the genus Princisia. It grows to 5.6-10 cm, with the largest specimens usually male. The genus honours the entomologist Karlis Princis and the specific name the helminthologist Daniel van Waerebek of Antananarivo. Males often have a fringe of golden yellow along the abdomen, while females are mostly black with an odd bluish sheen. The notch at the front of the pronotum used to define the genus also occurs in other species including G. portentosa, so whether Princisia is a valid genus remains debated. Care matches G. portentosa closely, though keepers describe this species as a little more demanding. Keep at 24-29 C; all life stages climb glass, so a sealed lid is required.
