Gromphadorhina oblongonota
A hissing cockroach from southern Madagascar that grows among the largest of all cockroaches despite being wingless. Adults are oxblood with stripes of varying width, and hiss by forcing air through abdominal spiracles.
Gromphadorhina oblongonota is a large wingless cockroach from southern Madagascar and one of four species in the genus Gromphadorhina. In captivity males reach about 80 mm and females about 76 mm, exceeding almost all other cockroaches in length despite having no wings. Newborn nymphs are grey with orange markings and gain red or black tones with age; some subadults show white markings on the thorax while others are nearly solid black. Adults are oxblood with overlying stripes of varying thickness. When disturbed they force air through their abdominal spiracles to produce a hiss. Keep at 24-29 C, give generous vertical space and a varied diet, which are the keys to a prolific, hardy colony. The species closely resembles G. portentosa, and stock in the trade includes mixed populations and hybrids of the two.

Keep at 24-29 C. The species is not fussy about air humidity, but avoid extreme dryness to prevent moulting problems.
All life stages can climb glass, so a secure lid or a climbing barrier is essential. Provide generous vertical space with bark or egg crates.
Combine vegetables and fruit with grains or prepared insect food, plus dried hardwood leaves. A varied diet gives the most prolific colonies.
No venom and no biting. When disturbed it hisses by forcing air through abdominal spiracles, which is a threat display and harmless.
It is hard to distinguish from G. portentosa and hybrid stock circulates in the trade. Keep lines separate if pure stock matters. The specific name is often misspelt oblongata or oblongonata, so check for oblongonota when searching or reading labels.
