Archimandrita tesselata is a large cockroach ranging from Central America to Colombia; Distribution records centre on Costa Rica and extend to Panama, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Colombia. In captivity both sexes reach about 72 mm. The fine dark speckling scattered over the pale tegmina, as if peppered, gives the species its English name. It cannot climb glass and is calm in the hand, making it one of the best cockroaches for handling. Keep it in a roomy enclosure with plenty of vertical surfaces for moulting and a moist substrate; a steady supply of dead, dried hardwood leaves is regarded as vital to its health. It is ovoviviparous, and a mature female produces a litter averaging about thirty nymphs two to three times a year. Females live for several years, while males often last about one year.
