Therea petiveriana
A ground-dwelling crepuscular cockroach from southern India with white spots on black. It burrows under leaf litter or loose soil by day, and its pattern is thought to mimic a ground beetle that sprays chemical irritants.
Therea petiveriana is a crepuscular cockroach of the scrub forests of southern India and belongs to a basal lineage within the cockroaches. Its rounded body carries a bold black-and-white pattern believed to mimic the ground beetle Anthia sexguttata, which sprays chemical irritants. The spots on the asymmetrical tegmina are placed so that they appear symmetrical when closed. The upper side of the abdomen is orange-yellow but hidden by the tegmina. The head is folded back under the pronotal shield with the ocelli facing forward, helping the insect sense light, and it forages actively in the early morning and late evening, burrowing under leaf litter or loose soil during the day. It is oviparous: a female produces up to 13 oothecae over 3 to 40 days and deposits each in suitably moist leaf litter. Nymphs live underground and may go as deep as 30 cm in the dry season, often taking two years or more to reach adulthood.
