Deropeltis paulinoi is a blattid cockroach of southern Africa; GBIF records come from Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The genus, known in English as the hunchback roaches, was erected by Burmeister in 1838 for African species. Adults measure about 36 mm in males and 30 mm in females. Males have long, narrow wings and may fly, whereas females remain wingless and nymph-like at maturity. Nymphs are orange with a black teardrop mark on the abdomen and develop into adults with a black body outlined in orange-yellow. Nymphs and adults often cluster together at rest, which is thought to reinforce their warning colouration as a group. When startled they simultaneously release a defensive secretion with a sharp, artificial smell. The species is oviparous and likes warmth and high air humidity, while the substrate is best kept on the dry side.
