Gyna lurida
An African cockroach whose nymphs show a striking black-and-white marbling. Adults vary in colour and both sexes climb and fly. It is highly prolific, with litters that can exceed 200 nymphs.
Gyna lurida is an African blaberid cockroach; species of Gyna are known collectively in English as porcelain roaches. GBIF records come from Tanzania, Kenya, the Republic of the Congo and Cameroon. Adults measure about 27 mm in males and 31 mm in females. Adult colouring varies between individuals, but the nymphs carry a crisp black-and-white marbling that is the main attraction of the species. Nymphs cannot climb, whereas adults of both sexes climb and fly, and at times appear to prefer flying to climbing. Their movement is generally erratic and fast. The species is ovoviviparous and extremely prolific: a female can give birth to more than 200 tiny nymphs in a single litter. It has been cultured by enthusiasts for a long time, is undemanding about temperature and substrate, and is easy to keep.
