It cannot climb glass or fly, which makes it easy to manage, and its stocky, meaty nymphs make it a well-regarded feeder. It is highly productive: females are reported to give birth to forty or more young every two months, and it can be more prolific than Blaptica dubia. Adults often have tattered wings. For years this was blamed on conspecific nibbling caused by a lack of protein or moisture, but wild individuals show the same wing wear, so it may simply be the natural state of the species, which lacks the wing musculature for powered flight and has no other need for intact wings. Keep at 24-29 C with moist substrate in a ventilated enclosure.
