Shelfordella lateralis is an outdoor-dwelling cockroach ranging from North Africa to Central Asia; adults measure about 3 cm. Males are slender and brownish orange with long yellowish wings that allow gliding. Females are dark brown to black with cream markings on the pronotal shield, and have short vestigial wings that do not permit flight. Nymphs are brown in front, black behind, and wingless. The species is oviparous, and a female produces dozens of oothecae over her life. Neither adults nor nymphs can climb glass and they do not burrow, which is why they have displaced crickets as a staple feeder insect. In the United States the species was first noticed in 1978 around a military depot in California and is believed to have arrived on equipment returning from Central Asia. Keep warm at 24-31 C with moist substrate for steady reproduction.
