Damon variegatus is a phrynichid whip spider ranging from the DRC and Tanzania south to South Africa and Namibia. The flattened body is mottled, and the first pair of legs is not used for walking but held forward like antennae to locate prey and obstacles. Amblypygids have neither venom nor silk glands; the worst they can do is pinch with their spiny pedipalps. A 2005 revision moved the populations west of the Kalahari, in Namibia and southern Angola, to a separate species, Damon sylviae, so animals from different localities cannot be assumed to be the same species. Husbandry information is thinner than for the congeneric D. medius and D. diadema.
