About
Damon medius is a phrynichid whip spider of the wetland forests and rainforests of West Africa. The body measures 3-4cm, is strongly flattened, and rests on thin fragile legs used to walk sideways like a crab. Males have far longer antenniform first legs than females and hold them forward to probe their surroundings. The large spiny pedipalps are used to seize small insects in ambush. Amblypygids have neither silk glands nor venom and cannot harm people. The species is extremely light-shy and nocturnal, favouring caves, spaces under bark and rock crevices that stay dark, warm and humid. Keep it in a tall enclosure of at least 30 x 30 x 40cm furnished with cork back panels and bark to give plenty of vertical hiding places. Several animals can share an enclosure if there is enough space and structure, and secure footing at moulting time is the decisive factor in keeping them alive.
