Phormingochilus everetti
A tarantula endemic to Borneo, sold under the trade name Borneo black for its dark colouration. It is the type species of Phormingochilus and is known for moving in bursts of speed and becoming defensive when cornered.
Phormingochilus everetti was described by Pocock in 1895 and is the type species of the genus, endemic to Borneo. It is known from Sarawak and Labuan in Malaysia and from Brunei, and the specific name honours the British naturalist Alfred Hart Everett. The holotype female has a carapace 28.5mm long and an abdomen 26mm long; the male was described by Gabriel and Sherwood in 2019. Phormingochilus is separated from related genera by the rounded apex of the male palpal bulb, by the proportions of legs one and four in females, and by its distribution, which is restricted to Borneo and Sulawesi. The population once treated under the subspecies name Lampropelma nigerrimum arboricola has since been moved into this genus as Phormingochilus arboricola. Members of the genus are occasionally kept as pets and are known for moving in bursts of speed and for becoming defensive when cornered.

No primary source for species-specific temperature or humidity was found. It comes from Bornean rainforest, so the enclosure should not be allowed to dry out.
No primary source describing this species' own habits was found. The genus includes arboreal species, so the safest setup is a tall enclosure with upright cork bark plus substrate deep enough to dig in.
Offer active live prey such as crickets and roaches and remove uneaten items within a day.
As an Old World species it has no urticating hairs. It moves in bursts of speed and will take a defensive posture and bite when cornered, so it is kept hands-off.
It cannot be housed with others. It is uncommon in the trade, and species have moved between Lampropelma, Omothymus and this genus in the past, so check the scientific name given by the seller.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
