Opistophthalmus boehmi, the yellow forest scorpion, is a small burrowing scorpion of about 5 cm. It is strongly fossorial, excavating intricate tunnels and spending days buried at the bottom of its lair, so in a properly set up enclosure it is rarely seen. GBIF records come mainly from South Africa and extend to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Botswana. The genus is common in the trade and generally hardy, but the animals are nervous and readily take a defensive posture. Kept together they fight and cannibalise one another frequently, so individuals must be housed alone. The venom is usually regarded as low in toxicity, but the sting is quite painful. The key to keeping the species is deep substrate that lets it dig, and leaving the finished burrow undisturbed.
