Sympodium spp.
A xeniid soft coral that forms a thin encrusting mat over rock and raises densely packed, short-stalked polyps. Specimens with blue or green fluorescence are traded for aquariums.
Sympodium is a genus of octocoral soft corals in the family Xeniidae, order Malacalcyonacea, described by Ehrenberg in 1834. It occurs on shallow reefs across the Indo-West Pacific and has been recorded from Japanese waters. Where other genera in the family raise branches from a stalk, Sympodium spreads a thin encrusting mat over rock and packs it with short-stalked polyps, each bearing the eight pinnate tentacles common to octocorals. Specimens with blue or green fluorescence are favoured in the aquarium trade. Koido and colleagues, reporting on the species diversity of Xeniidae in 2019, treated Japanese Sympodium alongside the other genera in the family through comparison of colony form and sclerites. It is zooxanthellate, drawing most of its nutrition from photosynthesis, and grows by extending its base across the rock. As a soft coral with no stony skeleton it is not covered by the CITES coral listings.

LiveAquaria lists xeniids as high-light corals, so provide medium to strong light; adequate light is needed to keep the fluorescent colour.
Give it moderate flow and set it on a flat rock it can encrust. It spreads over neighbours, so leave a gap at the boundary.
Water 24-26C, specific gravity 1.023-1.025 (salinity 33-35 ppt), pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12. Iodine and trace elements are recommended.
Most of its nutrition comes from photosynthesis. Micro-plankton or foods for filter-feeding invertebrates offered about once a week are beneficial.
It encrusts as it spreads, so manage the boundary to stop it climbing onto neighbouring corals. It is easily confused with other genera in the family and trade names alone do not identify it. Having no stony skeleton, it is not covered by the CITES coral listings.
Intermediate. This is an intermediate-level species. Some prior experience and knowledge of environmental management are recommended.
The ideal temperature for Sympodium is 24〜26℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
Sympodium feeds on: Mainly nutrition from its zooxanthellae, with micro-plankton or foods for filter-feeding invertebrates as a supplement.. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
