Euphyllia paradivisa
A branching hard coral displaying trumpet-shaped tentacles, named for their appearance during spawning. Sensitive to water flow placement. Beginner to intermediate species with straightforward care needs.
Frogspawn coral (Euphyllia paradivisa, family Euphylliidae) is a large-polyp stony (LPS) coral from Indo-Pacific reef slopes. Numerous tentacles with bulbous, rounded tips emerge from a branching skeleton, resembling a mass of frog eggs and giving the coral its name. It shows greens, golds, and purples, and the tentacles sway beautifully in the current. It is relatively easy to keep under low to moderate lighting and gentle low to moderate flow. Avoid strong direct current, which damages the tentacles, and intense light, which causes fading. Its long sweeper tentacles aggressively attack nearby corals, so ample spacing is essential. Feeding once or twice weekly promotes color and growth. It propagates by skeletal division and is a popular Euphyllia alongside hammer and torch corals.
