The tricoloured munia (Lonchura malacca) ranges across the Indian subcontinent to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and southern China. Linnaeus described it in 1766 in the twelfth edition of Systema Naturae as Loxia malacca. It measures about 11.5 cm, with wings of 55-57 mm and a culmen and tarsus each 12-13 mm; males tend to show a more pronounced culmen ridge. The black head, white body and chestnut back make a sharp three-colour contrast. Immature birds have pale brown upperparts, lack the dark head and have uniform buff underparts, so they are easily confused with young scaly-breasted munias. Both sexes build the nest, a loosely woven oval with a single entrance, set on reeds or swamp grass roughly a metre above water. Clutches are usually 4-5 eggs, though seven is common in India.
