Gallus gallus domesticus
A Malaysian bantam regarded as the smallest chicken breed in the world, standing 25 cm or less and usually weighing under 500 g. Its hallmark is the upright carriage: full breast, vertical tail and wings held down.
The Serama (Malay: Ayam Serama) is a bantam breed established in recent decades in the Malaysian state of Kelantan and regarded as the smallest chicken in the world. It appears to have arisen from crosses between Japanese and Malaysian bantams, and the modern breed is attributed to Wee Yean Een of Kelantan; the name honours Rama, the title of the Kings of Thailand. It was first exhibited in 1990. The carriage is upright, with a full breast, vertical tail feathers held tight to the body and wings held down almost to the ground, so that in profile the bird describes a vase-like or wide V outline. For all its assertive stance it is calm and manageable and shows no aggression. There is no written standard in its home country; birds are judged on table tops for type, behaviour, temperament and size.

It needs little floor area but enough height to hold its upright stance. It is sensitive to cold and damp, so year-round outdoor keeping requires heating and shelter from rain.
For all its confident stance it is calm, easily handled and shows no aggression, and it tames readily.
Being small, the cock is not loud, but it crows at dawn like any other chicken.
