The red-billed firefinch (Lagonosticta senegala) is an estrildid finch found across most of sub-Saharan Africa. It is about 10 cm long. The adult male is entirely scarlet apart from brown wings, with a pink bill and a yellow eye-ring; the female has uniformly brown upperparts, buff underparts and a small red patch in front of each eye. Six subspecies are recognised, the nominate senegala plus rhodopsis, brunneiceps, somaliensis, ruberrima and rendalli, separated by range. It is a familiar bird around human habitation. An introduced population in Egypt has died out, while birds introduced to southern Algeria are currently expanding northward. It has been in the European bird trade since aviculture began in the 18th century, and the ornithologist Vieillot bred it before 1790, recording that higher room temperatures are needed to rear the young successfully.
