The dusky parrot (Pionus fuscus) is a Pionus parrot of northern South America, centred on the Guianas and the Guiana Shield and extending into eastern Venezuela and northern Brazil, with a small disjunct population west of Lake Maracaibo on the Colombia-Venezuela border. It is about 24 cm long. It is dark brownish-grey overall, looking almost black in poor light. It has a medium-width grey eye-ring that often fades to white in captivity, a splay of cream-white feathers on the upper neck, a pinkish-red tinge to the belly and red undertail coverts. The flight feathers and tail are blue, the tail red at the base. It inhabits humid lowland forest and nests in tree cavities. The white eggs, usually three or four, are incubated by the female for about 26 days, and the young leave the nest about 70 days after hatching. It is not known as a great talker, but may learn 10-20 words. In Japan it follows other Pionus species into specialist shops.
