Male-to-male aggression is particularly intense, with mandibles used to grab and throw opponents or sever body parts. Stag beetles are more aggressive than rhinoceros beetles, and housing males together should be avoided as a rule. Flat stag beetles (Dorcus titanus) are especially combative and can even kill females of their own species.
