Oryzias latipes
An improved medaka combining vermilion body colour with the transparent-scale trait. The added trait deepens the vermilion, and produces fish whose colour drops out in patches to leave red and white, or whose tail fins take on colour. It was bred in 2008 by Masaki Komiya from youkihi crossed with a transparent-scale medaka.
Youkihi transparent-scale is the nickname for an improved medaka with vermilion body colour and the transparent-scale trait; its classification name is the vermilion transparent-scale medaka. The Medaka Web Encyclopedia registers it as type No.0081, variety No.0071 and fixed variety No.0013, created in 2008 by Masaki Komiya from youkihi crossed with a transparent-scale medaka. Adding transparent scales to the vermilion deepened the colour, produced fish whose colour dropped out in patches to leave red and white, and gave others coloured tail fins. Transparent scale is the trait in which the gill covers turn red: iridophores are missing there, so blood shows through. It does more than redden the cheeks, also making the body slightly translucent, adding colour to the fins and dropping colour out in patches; fish without the trait are called normal-scaled by contrast. Youkihi transparent-scale has spawned many derivatives, and the encyclopedia registers forms including youkihi transparent-scale daruma (type No.0084) and youkihi transparent-scale swallow (No.0339)

The Japan Medaka Association's classification manual sorts varieties by traits that can be seen rather than by genotype, and does not set out how individual traits are inherited. Traits the manual explicitly says can be passed on and produced by selective, multi-generation breeding are listed as line-bred; the rest are grouped under Other.

Prepared medaka food, green water
The depth of the vermilion and the red cheeks read well from the side, while the red-and-white pattern left by dropped-out colour can also be judged from above. The Medaka Web Encyclopedia recommends outdoor keeping and suggests shading half the container in summer.
Commercial prepared medaka food is the staple, given in an amount finished within a few minutes. Leftovers decay and foul the water, so adjust the quantity. Green water rich in phytoplankton suits fry rearing.
Slightly acidic to slightly alkaline water is considered ideal, and the water drifts toward acidic as keeping continues. Around one water change per week is the guideline, and because sudden shifts in temperature or pH cause stress, acclimatise new fish by floating the bag. FishBase records the wild water chemistry of this species as pH 7.0-8.0 and hardness 9-19 dH.
A peaceful schooling fish, normally kept as a group of the same variety. One litre of water per fish is the guideline against overcrowding; overstocking causes poor growth, reduced breeding, oxygen shortage and water fouling.
Outdoors the spawning season runs from about April to October, once water reaches 18C or above with 12-13 hours of daylight. For year-round indoor breeding, 25-28C water and over 13 hours of lighting are the guideline. Eggs hatch at a cumulative 250 degree-days, about 10 days at 25C.
Since classification of transparent scale rests on red cheeks, selection starts there. Even within one line some fish are deeply vermilion, some red and white, and some have coloured tails, so decide which expression to aim for before line breeding.
