A medaka with red, white, and black tri-color pattern like Nishikigoi. Each individual has unique patterns.
Sanshoku (Tricolor) medaka is an improved variety with red, white, and black coloration modeled after Nishikigoi koi patterns. Each individual has entirely unique color placement, ratio, and pattern, making every fish a one-of-a-kind collectible. Fixation rate for tricolor is low — mass hatching and repeated selection are needed to obtain ideally patterned individuals. Color expression is also influenced by water temperature and environment, with lower temperatures tending to fade body color. White containers with top-view observation best reveal the tricolor contrast. Carotenoid-containing food helps maintain the red component.
