A unique goldfish with pompom-like nasal growths. Traditional variety loved in China for centuries.
The Pompom goldfish (Hanafusa in Japanese, Rongqiu in Chinese) is a traditional Chinese fancy goldfish variety with a history spanning several centuries. Its defining feature is the pair of fleshy, pompom-like growths that develop around the nostrils, giving the fish a uniquely endearing facial appearance. The size, density, and symmetry of the pompoms are the primary aesthetic criteria for the breed. Some individuals have a dorsal fin while others do not; all have a bifurcated fantail. The pompoms are extremely delicate: filter intakes must be sponge-covered, all sharp decorations must be removed, and rough gravel should be avoided, as snagging can permanently damage the growths. Regular water changes are important to prevent bacterial growth in the pompom tissue. Pompom goldfish are gentle, slow swimmers best kept in low-hazard tanks of 45 liters or more.
