As its English name Burmese beetle mimic suggests, adult females are rounded and dark brown and closely resemble a small beetle, whereas males have the slender, typical roach shape with a creamy to pale toffee stripe or blotch on the wings. Both sexes measure about 30 mm. Males can climb but are very clumsy and have a poor grip. The species is oviparous, and its ornate oothecae take roughly three to five months to hatch. In culture, deep substrate works best, with a moist lower layer grading to a moist or dry upper one. It is undemanding to keep, and the marked difference between the sexes makes it a rewarding display species. The related Ergaula pilosa is larger and darker but shares essentially the same care requirements.
