The red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) is widespread across tropical Asia from India through South-East Asia to southern China. The upperparts are brown and the underparts whitish with buff flanks, and a dark spur runs onto the breast at shoulder level. The head carries a tall, pointed black crest, a red patch behind the eye and a thin black moustachial line. The tail is long and brown with white terminal tips, and the vent is red. Juveniles lack the red patch behind the eye and have a rufous-orange vent. Nine subspecies are recognised. The call is a loud, sharp kink-a-joo. The species has been carried by people to New South Wales in Australia, to Mauritius, Spain and Florida, where it has become established. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.
