In tropical fish mail order sales and peer-to-peer transactions, fish are placed in bags and transported via courier services. During transport, fish are confined in a tight space, exposed to oxygen consumption, difficulty regulating body temperature, and stress from vibrations. Even in these harsh conditions, to deliver healthy fish, precise knowledge is required at every step from packaging to post-delivery water acclimation.
The greatest benefit of direct sales from breeders is "receiving healthy individuals directly," but to maximize this value, both the sender (breeder) and receiver (buyer) must possess correct knowledge of packaging and water acclimation.
Pre-Shipping Preparation — Fasting and Condition Check
Fasting 24-48 Hours Before Shipping
The primary reason for fasting fish before shipping is "to prevent water quality deterioration." If fish are digesting during transport and excrete, ammonia concentration in the sealed bag rises sharply, reaching lethal levels in a short time. For hardy adult fish, 24 hours of fasting is recommended; for small fish and fry, 12-18 hours.
Health Check Before Shipping
Confirm that the individual being shipped is healthy:
- No white spots, injuries, or ulcers on the body surface
- Fins are not torn (especially for long-finned varieties, watch for fin rot)
- Swimming is normal (not staying at the bottom or drifting at the surface)
- Has good appetite (before fasting)
Delay shipping for any individual with signs of illness. Transport stress can cause rapid deterioration of health.
Basics of Packaging — Plastic Bags, Oxygen, and Insulation
Bag Selection and Double Bagging
Use specialized fish shipping bags that are thicker than regular plastic bags (0.06-0.1mm) and have rounded corners. This prevents corners from tearing due to vibration during transport.
Always use double bagging. This prevents water leakage if the inner bag tears. Choose a bag size with approximately three times the fish's body length in extra space.
Water and Oxygen Ratio
The ideal ratio of water to oxygen (air) inside the bag is 1 part water to 2-3 parts oxygen. For example, fill a 20cm×30cm bag with about 1/4 water and fill the rest with oxygen.
Pure oxygen cylinders are ideal, but oxygen tablets (containing sodium percarbonate) available commercially can also be placed in the bag. However, controlling the reaction speed of oxygen tablets is difficult, and we recommend using pure oxygen cylinders for long-distance transport (delivery the next day or later).
How to Seal the Bag
Seal the bag with rubber bands. Minimize water leakage risk by wrapping 2-3 rubber bands instead of just one. While bags with zippers are reliable, when using rubber bands, fold the mouth first before wrapping to prevent them from slipping off.
Summer Packaging — Heat Control Is Critical
Summer (June-September) shipping is the highest-risk season. Courier delivery storage areas can exceed 40℃, far exceeding the 26-28℃ preferred by tropical fish.
How to Use Cooling Packs
Wrap commercial-grade cooling packs (500g-1kg, not small cake-cooling packs) in plastic bags and place inside the cardboard box. Placing cooling packs directly against the fish bag causes rapid cooling and increases mortality risk, so place 1-2 sheets of newspaper between the bag and cooling pack as an absolute rule.
Adjust the number of cooling packs according to transport time:
- Next-day delivery (Kanto to Kansai area): 1-2 × 500g cooling packs
- Two-day delivery (Kyushu, Hokkaido, etc.): 2-3 × 500g cooling packs + consider using dry ice
Using Styrofoam Boxes
In summer, use highly insulating styrofoam boxes in addition to cardboard boxes. Styrofoam boxes used by fish specialty shops for receiving live stock are available through auction sites and packaging material retailers. Be sure to securely tape the styrofoam box lid.
Winter Packaging — Health Issues and Mortality from Low Temperature
Winter (November-March) requires maximum insulation. When water temperature drops below 20℃, metabolism in tropical fish drops sharply and immunity decreases. Below 15℃, most tropical fish reach a lethal state.
Using Hand Warmers (Disposable Heat Packs)
Use oxygen-based hand warmers (the type that generate heat even in low-oxygen environments) and attach them inside the styrofoam box. Separate them from the fish bag with cardboard or newspaper to prevent direct contact.
Standard hand warmers consume oxygen and may reduce oxygen in the bag. While placing them outside the fish bag (in the space inside the styrofoam box) is fine, if they come into contact with the bag, choose a low-oxygen type.
Optimizing Shipping Timing
In winter, avoid shipping Monday-Tuesday (risk of delayed delivery over the weekend). Also, Friday shipping may result in delivery the following Monday, so Wednesday-Thursday shipping is safest.
Acclimation on the Receiver's Side — Proper Handling Upon Arrival
Confirmation Immediately After Opening
Upon receiving the package, open it immediately and check the fish's condition. If the bag interior is cloudy (ammonia accumulation) or the fish is lying on its side, emergency action is needed.
Temperature Acclimation (1 hour)
Float the arrived bag in the aquarium for 30-60 minutes to bring the bag water temperature close to the aquarium temperature. Proceed to the next step when the temperature difference is 2℃ or less.
Water Acclimation (Drip Method: 1-2 hours)
The "drip method" is optimal for acclimating live-shipped fish:
1. Transfer the fish to a bucket with the bag water (cut the bag open)
2. Use an air tube and clip to drip aquarium water into the bucket (1-2 drops per second)
3. When the bucket water volume has tripled (approximately 1-2 hours), net the fish and transfer to the aquarium
Do not put the bag water into the aquarium (it may contain pathogens or pesticides).
Observation Period in Quarantine Tank (1-2 weeks)
Fish upon arrival have compromised immunity and risk introducing disease. Rather than placing directly in the main tank, observe in a quarantine tank (treatment tank) for 1-2 weeks. Move to the main tank if there are no white spots, injuries, or respiratory distress.
Common Problems and Solutions
If white spot disease developed upon arrival
Treat in the quarantine tank with salt bath (0.3-0.5%) or commercial white spot medication. Introduce to the main tank only after complete recovery.
If the water in the bag turned yellow to brown
This is a sign of ammonia accumulation. Do not skip the drip method and place directly in the tank. Instead, first dilute ammonia by performing water changes with dechlorinated fresh water, and begin acclimation only after the fish has stabilized.
If the fish died during transport
It is customary to contact the sender on the day of arrival with photos. It is important to confirm in advance whether the sender offers DOA (dead on arrival) guarantees and what compensation is provided.
