Roses Thrive on Year-Round Rhythm

Once planted in your garden, roses can flourish for decades. But consistent, planned management throughout the year is essential for health and beautiful blooms. Neglecting seasonal tasks leads to pest damage, weakened growth, and poor flowering.

This calendar is based on Kanto region climate. Timing may shift 1-2 weeks depending on your location.

January–February (Winter Care & Major Pruning)

Main tasks: Winter pruning, dormant fertilizing, stock sterilization

Major pruning guidelines (late January–early February): - Once-blooming varieties: No pruning needed (prune in autumn) - Repeat-blooming varieties: Cut back 1/3 to 1/2 of total growth - Remove dead branches, diseased wood, and thin branches (thinner than a pencil) - After pruning, spray with fungicide (lime sulfur, etc.) to prevent fungal and viral diseases

Dormant fertilizer: Apply mixed organic matter 30cm from the base—bone meal, canola meal, and compost. Over winter, nutrients slowly dissolve into soil, boosting spring growth.

March (Budbreak)

New growth begins. Clean up remaining dead and thin wood. When buds swell, apply organic or slow-release synthetic fertilizer.

April (Spring Bloom Prep)

Buds forming. Apply liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks. Aphids thrive now—catch early, remove by hand, or spray insecticide as needed.

May (First Bloom & Peak Season)

Roses at their best. Stop fertilizing while flowers open. Once blooms fade, apply "thank-you fertilizer" (liquid) to encourage regrowth.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly to prevent disease from old petals.

June–July (Monsoon & Summer Care)

Monsoon season: Black spot and powdery mildew peak. Spray preventative fungicide every 1-2 weeks.
