- Pure calcium (without D3), a fine powder of calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate. In environments where UVB lighting is properly installed, calcium without vitamin D3 becomes the basic choice. Since the body can synthesize D3 from UVB, external D3 supplementation is unnecessary.
- Calcium + Vitamin D3, used in environments without UVB lighting or where UVB is weak. Nocturnal species such as leopard geckos have low UVB requirements, so D3-containing calcium is often the primary choice in these cases.
- An all-in-one type of Calcium + D3 + Multivitamin. While convenient, it has the drawback of being unable to adjust the amount of each component individually.
The ideal ratio of calcium to phosphorus is 2:1. Since feeder insects are high in phosphorus and low in calcium, supplementation is necessary.
The Role of Vitamin D3 and the Risks of Overdosing
Vitamin D3 is an important vitamin that promotes intestinal absorption of calcium, and without it, calcium cannot be absorbed into the body no matter how much is given. To prevent excessive D3 intake, in environments where UVB lighting is properly installed, limit the frequency of D3-containing supplements to 2-4 times per month, and normally use calcium without D3. In environments without UVB lighting, use D3-containing calcium at every feeding, but be careful not to overlap with multivitamins.
