A tank crash is a phenomenon where a coral aquarium rapidly collapses. What appears to be a stable tank can, within days to weeks, trigger massive coral bleaching and death, fish extinction, and abnormal water odors. 2. Oxygen Depletion (Low DO)
Power outages, water circulation pump failures, or insufficient aeration cause dissolved oxygen to drop rapidly. Early signs include fish gasping at the surface and corals suddenly retracting.
3. Rapid Water Parameter Changes
- Sudden drop or rise in KH (alkalinity) (fluctuations of 0.5 dKH or more per day are risky)
- Abrupt changes in salinity (specific gravity) (ATO malfunction, large water changes, etc.)
- Sudden spikes in ammonia and nitrite (live rock collapse, mass livestock death, etc.)
4. Accidental Chemical or Toxin Contamination
Household detergents, insecticides, air fresheners, perfumes, and other chemicals can cause fatal damage even in tiny amounts if they enter the tank. Proper management of water change buckets and thorough hand washing before work are critical.
5. Cascading Equipment Failures
Heater malfunction causing high temperatures (30°C or above), chiller failure leading to temperature rise in summer, protein skimmer shutdown causing water quality degradation, and other equipment failures can chain together to trigger compound crashes.

Perform a 25-30% water change with dechlorinated artificial seawater (specific gravity 1.025-1.026). This dilutes toxins and excess nutrients. Avoid changing more than 50% at once to prevent specific gravity and temperature shock; split the change over multiple sessions for safety.

- Ammonia and nitrite remain unstable above 1 ppm
A reset is a significant loss, but it is a more rational decision than continuing to maintain a chronically failing tank and losing livestock, equipment, and time in the process.
Tips for Successfully Re-establishing a Tank After a Reset
- Purchase new live rock from a live rock supplier — Old collapsed live rock may harbor anaerobic bacteria and pathogens
- Don't skip cycling (bacterial colonization) — Even using commercial bacterial supplements (like Dr. Tim's), allow at least 4-6 weeks for the setup phase
- Start with hardy soft corals — Reserve sensitive species like Acropora and Scleractinia for after the tank is fully stable
- Invest in monitoring equipment — Real-time monitoring of pH, ORP, and temperature can catch early signs of the next crash

Prevention is the best strategy.
- Weekly water parameter testing (KH, Ca, Mg, NO₃, PO₄)
- Regular equipment maintenance (verify heater, water circulation pump, and skimmer operation)
- Power outage preparedness (install UPS + air pump and plan procedures in advance)
- Check specific gravity and temperature during water changes (prevent sudden changes from operator error)
- Prevent chemical contamination (use water change buckets dedicated to the tank, wash hands thoroughly before work)
