Many aquarists dream of keeping large saltwater fish as the ultimate goal in saltwater aquariums. Species like Napoleon wrasse, Naso tang, and Corallia butterflyfish, with their overwhelming presence, can only be successfully maintained long-term with proper environments and deep knowledge.
Keeping large saltwater fish is fundamentally different from caring for typical small fish. From the outset, understand that the scale is substantially larger in every aspect: required tank size, filtration capacity, feeding amounts, and annual maintenance costs. Approaching this with a "we'll figure it out" mentality not only endangers the fish's life but will also result in equipment costs and labor far exceeding expectations.
Species Characteristics and Required Tank Sizes
Napoleon Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus)
One of the world's largest wrasse species, with individuals exceeding 2 meters recorded in the wild. Juveniles have black bodies with white stripes, transforming into vibrant turquoise-blue and green coloration as they mature. Home aquarium care requires a minimum tank of 800–1,500L or larger. Since growth is rapid, if starting with juveniles, investment in equipment that accounts for their final adult size is essential. Since virtually aquarium-grade equipment is required, personal care examples in Japan remain extremely rare.
Naso Tang
A member of the surgeonfish family classified in the Naso genus, named for the horn-like projection protruding from its forehead. Reaching lengths of 40–60cm and possessing an active swimming nature, a minimum tank of 600–800L is recommended. They prefer strong water currents and have good stamina, making them relatively tolerant of freshwater dips and medication baths. Their primary diet is frozen seaweed (such as nori sheets and wakame), which must be provided daily for optimal health. With adequate space, they can coexist peacefully with the same species, and multiple individuals can school together in large aquariums.
Corallia Butterflyfish
Known as a relatively hardy species within the butterflyfish family, reaching a maximum length of approximately 20cm. The distinctive black, white, and orange coloration is appealing and popular even among intermediate keepers. While they can be kept in 150–200L tanks, their habit of pecking at corals and anemones makes introduction into reef tanks inadvisable. They readily adapt to prepared foods and are valued for adding color to large fish community tanks.
Building a Powerful Filtration System
Large saltwater fish produce waste and uneaten food at rates several times greater than small fish due to their size. Constructing a filtration system capable of processing this waste is an absolute prerequisite for successful long-term care.
- Overflow System (Sump Filtration): The standard setup for large fish keeping. Maintain a flow rate of 3–5 times the total water volume per hour and combine dry and wet media
- Large Protein Skimmer: Removes proteins via foam before they decompose, cutting off the root cause of water quality decline. Choosing an oversized model is best practice
- Robust Biological Filtration: Use live rock generously. Since bacterial colonization takes 3–6 months, avoid rushing to add livestock
- Regular Water Changes: Dilute nitrates and phosphates with 10–15% weekly changes (twice weekly recommended for large fish tanks)
Target maintaining stable water temperature at 25–27°C, specific gravity at 1.023–1.025, and pH at 8.1–8.3. Installing an ATO (automatic top-off system) to prevent specific gravity fluctuations from evaporation is particularly effective in large tanks.
Feeding and Health Management in Practice
Basic feeding is once or twice daily. Combining frozen seafood (shrimp, squid, clams), seaweed-based foods (nori sheets and spirulina pellets), and large prepared pellets provides balanced nutrition. Napoleon wrasse and Naso tangs become so tame that they recognize and approach their keepers, which is one of the joys of keeping them.
Particularly important to health management is quarantine. Large fish can contract white spot disease (Cryptocaryon) or lymphocystis disease (white bumpy protrusions). After purchase, do not immediately introduce them to the main tank; instead, perform 2–4 weeks of treatment in a dedicated quarantine tank. Since medicating large fish in small tanks is challenging, it's ideal to have a quarantine tank with at least 100L capacity.
Key Points to Verify Before Purchase and Introduction
Large saltwater fish suffer significant energy depletion from transport stress, and purchasing unhealthy individuals increases the risk of long-term care failure. Be sure to verify the following before purchase:
- Is it actually eating?: Ask the shop to feed it in front of you and visually confirm appetite
- Check for body injuries and white spots: Inspect for missing fins, body wounds, and white spots
- Is swimming behavior natural?: Avoid fish that are laying on their side or showing signs of unsteadiness
- Do you know the final size?: If starting with juveniles, research adult size and required equipment in advance

Annual Costs and Commitment to Long-Term Care
Keeping large saltwater fish incurs not only initial acquisition costs but also substantial ongoing maintenance expenses. Combining electricity (large pumps, heaters, lighting), synthetic seawater, filter media and consumables, and daily feeding costs can easily total tens of thousands of yen monthly.
Yet the sight of a Napoleon wrasse swimming straight toward you or a school of Naso tangs gracefully cruising through a large tank represents an unmatched emotional experience in aquariums. Keeping large saltwater fish can be said to be "a privilege granted only to those with proper resolve and preparation." Approach this with adequate equipment, knowledge, and long-term commitment.
