Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) is a viral disease of parrots and parakeets caused by beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), a member of the Circoviridae family. First reported in Australia in the 1970s, it has since been documented in psittacine birds worldwide.
BFDV is a highly stable virus that can survive for extended periods (months to years) in dried feathers, feather dust, and feces. Transmission occurs via both oral and respiratory routes, and vertical transmission from parent to chick has also been documented.

BFDV attacks the immune system (particularly T lymphocytes), making secondary infections more likely. Lethargy, loss of appetite, and soft stools may also be observed.
Acute and Chronic Forms
Chicks and young birds typically develop acute disease that progresses rapidly with high mortality. Adults more commonly develop chronic disease with gradual feather abnormalities.
Diagnosis and Testing for PBFD
Definitive diagnosis requires PCR testing performed by a veterinarian. Viral DNA is detected from samples taken from blood or feathers.
If a bird tests positive, all other birds in contact should also be tested as they may be infected. However, some PCR-positive birds may be asymptomatic (latent infection), so retesting 3-6 months later is recommended to determine if the infection is persistent.

Avian bornavirus infection (Avian Bornaviral Ganglioneuritis / Proventricular Dilatation Disease, PDD) is a neurological disease caused by avian bornavirus (ABV). The causative virus was identified in 2008 for the disease previously known as Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD).
