A breed from crossing Wakin and Ryukin. Combines Wakin's swimming ability and Ryukin's elegance.
The Watonai is a Japanese hybrid goldfish created by crossing the Wakin with the Ryukin (or Oranda). Its name is said to derive from Watonai, the protagonist of the classic Bunraku and Kabuki play "Kokusenya Kassen." The breed inherits the Wakin's streamlined, active body form while adding the Ryukin's elegant bifurcated double tail, resulting in a fish that is both agile and graceful. Common colors include red, white, sarasa, and calico. The Watonai is hardy and cold-tolerant, handling temperatures from 5 to 30°C—making it suitable for unheated outdoor ponds. Its strong appetite and active swimming nature mean it should not be housed with slow-moving fancy varieties. Watonai can grow to 15–25 cm and are known for longevity, often living 10–15 years in well-maintained conditions. Spacious tanks of 60 liters or more or outdoor ponds are ideal.
