The London Shubunkin is one of the two main lineages developed in England from the Japanese-origin Shubunkin, pairing a slim, Wakin-like body with the multicolored calico (nacreous) coloration of the breed. Unlike the Bristol Shubunkin, with its large heart-shaped tail, the London Shubunkin has a shorter tail and a body closer to the Comet or Wakin, making it hardier and easier to keep. Its mosaic of red, white, black, and pale blue is unique to each fish, with strongly blue individuals especially prized. Cold-hardy and an active swimmer, it is well suited to outdoor ponds and water gardens and is easy enough for beginners. House it in a roomy tank (60 liters or more) or an outdoor pond with good filtration and regular water changes. Being hearty-appetited and energetic, it is not suited to housing with slow fancy varieties.
