Cubaris sp. 'Shiro Utsuri' is an undescribed pill isopod from Taiwan whose trade name is borrowed from koi keeping, where a shiro utsuri is a black fish broken up with clean white markings. The ground colour is a translucent white with black marks that range from heavy patches to a light scatter, so no two animals match. Adults sit at 15-20mm and stay out on the surface, which makes the markings easy to enjoy; it conglobates when startled and the contrast still shows on the curled body. Coming from subtropical Taiwan it wants more warmth and moisture than Mediterranean species, around 22-26C, with supplementary heat in a cold room over winter. Set up a humid gradient rather than a uniformly wet box, with good cross-ventilation to hold off mould. Give 5-8cm of living substrate built on flake soil with leaf litter and decaying hardwood, and keep a constant calcium source. It is hardy and settles quickly, breeds from roughly six to eight months old, and lives two to three years.
