The toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) is the largest member of the toucan family and is widespread in South America. It averages about 56 cm in length, with a glossy black body, a white throat and breast, a white rump and red undertail coverts. Its most conspicuous feature is the huge yellow-orange bill, black at the base and marked with a large black oval at the tip of the upper mandible; the bill measures 173 to 215 mm in males and 158 to 202 mm in females and, though it looks heavy, is largely hollow and relatively light. The species ranges from the Guianas south to northern Argentina and Uruguay, and its range has been expanding southwards. Unlike other toucans, which live in continuous forest, it occupies a variety of semi-open habitats up to 1,750 m and is especially common in the Brazilian cerrado, in gallery forest and in the wetlands of the Pantanal. It feeds mainly on fleshy fruit but also takes insects and the eggs and nestlings of other birds. Nests are made in tree hollows and hold two to four eggs, which both parents incubate for 17 to 18 days.
